Windows 10 Security Updates Are Ending: Here’s What You Need To Know

You might have heard that Microsoft plans to end security updates for Windows 10 in October – a little more than 10 years since the initial release of Windows 10. This comes 5 years after they similarly ended support for Windows 7. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Microsoft has ended feature support for Windows 10 and confirmed there are no plans to release any more new versions of Windows 10.

  • The last major feature update for Windows 10 was version 22H2, released on October 18th, 2022.

  • All security updates will end on October 14th, 2025. After October 14th, 2025, Windows 10 will no longer receive updates that protect against new threats.

What does this mean for you?

Security updates fix vulnerabilities that hackers can use to break into your computer. When Microsoft finds a problem or an exploit, they release an update to protect you. When those updates stop, your system becomes more open to attacks because the exploits are no longer being patched. Without security updates, hackers will have an easier time breaking into your computer. Viruses or ransomware can lock you out of your computer, and if a new exploit or vulnerability is found, your email, banking information, and personal files could be at risk.

Over time, you may run into compatibility issues. Software you rely on may lose support for older systems as people migrate to Windows 11 and new software might be unsupported on Windows 10 all together. As your device ages you might also notice more errors or slower performance.

What can you do?

We know this can seem overwhelming, so that’s why we’re here!

Firstly, if your computer is fairly new it may be able to run Windows 11. At Buerer Computer Consulting, we can check if your current computer can handle an upgrade. If so, we’ll create a local backup of your files (photos, documents, and so on) and install Windows 11 for you.

If your PC is older and can’t meet the newer requirements, it may be time to think about a new device. Modern computers generally run faster and will be a better experience in the long run. We can find the right computer and peripherals for your upgrade depending on your needs and provide data transfer services. All your files will be right where you left them, but on your new machine!

If you’re not ready for an upgrade just yet, you still have time. Stay informed, keep an eye on when Windows 10 support ends, and feel free to ask for help if you are unsure about your next steps. We advise Norton 360 antivirus software to keep your devices protected and lower the risks until you decide on an upgrade or replacement and can get you set up on a Yearly or Monthly plan.
